The Fortress of Santa Maria of Arrábida is one of the most important 17th century fortresses of Portugal. Historic records indicate that the building was ordered to be built in 1676 during the regency of Prince D. Pedro, with the objective of preventing the landing of pirates who came to raid the Convent of Arrábida friars.
